Third-party logistics :
agile solutions for your clients' warehouse operations

Zero errors, maximum productivity, multi-client capability :
Balea solutions turn your order picking operations into a contractual advantage.

Need expert advice ?

Our logistics experts are here to help and will get back to you promptly.

For any 3PL logistics provider, every picking error carries an immediate contractual cost: disputes, penalties, reprocessing.

In a multi-client environment where quality is an SLA-backed commitment, your picking performance directly determines the profitability of your contracts and your ability to win new ones.

Balea designs smart picking solutions combining reliable hardware and real-time management software, engineered for the specific constraints of 3PL operators: flow diversity, data segregation, scalability and seamless integration with client IT systems. The French outsourced logistics market is worth nearly €30 billion* and continues to grow: in such a competitive sector, the combination of zero errors and productivity is your true differentiator.

Agile and modular by design, Balea’s 3PL warehouse solutions adapt to every operational configuration, delivering scalable order fulfilment equipment that grows with your client portfolio.

What is a third-party logistics (3PL) provider ?

Third-party logistics (3PL) refers to the outsourcing of a shipper’s logistics operations to a specialised provider: receiving, warehousing, inventory management, order fulfilment, shipping, returns management and reporting.

The 3PL provider handles these operations with its own teams and equipment, allowing its clients to focus on their core business. Order picking and fulfilment lie at the heart of a 3PL operator’s value proposition. Mastering your picking operations means mastering your quality of service.

To position 3PL within the logistics outsourcing spectrum, four levels of service are commonly distinguished :

What are the operational challenges of a 3PL warehouse ?

Multi-client management and flow diversity

Heterogeneous flows, stock segmentation, client-specific constraints, variable configurations across accounts : equipment must adapt without requiring a heavy reorganisation, including during the rapid reallocation of resources from one account to a new client at the end of a contract. It is also possible to pool a single fleet across multiple warehouses, optimising resource utilisation across the network.

Balea solutions are configurable per client and can be redeployed from one account to another without friction. Reconfiguration of picking parameters takes minutes, not days, ensuring seamless multi-client warehouse solutions.

Productivity under high throughput and client demands

SLAs set strict reliability thresholds, and every error translates directly into a dispute or penalty. Balea’s on-board weight verification secures every pick and protects the margin on your contracts.

Guaranteed pick accuracy reinforces your 3PL reputation with shippers and supports long-term contract renewals.

Quality of service as a contractual commitment

Shippers expect high throughput and seamless execution with no downtime. Preparing multiple orders simultaneously, optimising each picking round and eliminating manual validations are decisive levers. Balea addresses this with multi-order picking, HyperTour route optimisation and single-step weight verification that adds zero time to operations.

Scalability to handle peaks and new accounts

3PL activity is inherently variable : seasonality, promotional peaks, onboarding a new client. Balea solutions are modular and available for hire, allowing you to absorb these fluctuations without over-sizing your fleet. Scalable warehouse solutions designed for 3PL operators: scale up or down with modular equipment and no full overhaul required.

Interoperability and ease of integration

In-house WMS, ERP or OMS from each shipper: any picking solution must integrate without creating silos, particularly in 3PL WMS environments. Solea is natively compatible with the leading WMS platforms on the market and can connect to as many WMS instances as the client operates. Each new shipper is configured through parameterisation, with no bespoke IT development required. The trolleys are multi-operational and switch from one environment to another seamlessly.

Real-time data management

Solea, as a Warehouse Execution System (WES) dedicated to order picking, feeds real-time data back to the management layer, enabling you to monitor and improve 3PL warehouse performance and productivity. It also delivers full traceability, essential for sectors with regulatory requirements such as pharmaceuticals or cosmetics. Built-in dashboards provide client visibility into every KPI, supporting SLA reporting and billing justification.

What is intelligent order picking in logistics ?

Intelligent order picking is an approach to order fulfilment that combines several technologies to assist the picker in real time: guidance, light or screen cues, software-driven path optimisation and automated verification systems. At Balea, intelligent order picking is built on the hardware-software alliance: our smart picking trolleys such as the Balea Shopeur integrate gram-level weight verification, driven by our WES, SOLEA. It is this combination of on-board hardware and software intelligence that delivers both productivity and 100% order fulfilment accuracy.

Weight verification consists of automatically weighing each order during and/or after picking to confirm that the right products in the right quantities have been collected. Compared with barcode scanning, which confirms that an item has been scanned but not that it has been correctly placed in the right container, weight verification catches invisible errors: omissions, wrong quantities, reference mix-ups. It is today the most reliable method for achieving 100% order fulfilment accuracy, particularly in sectors where the cost of errors is high (pharmaceutical, cosmetics, food and beverage, luxury).

Reducing picking errors relies on three complementary levers: process reliability (clear instructions, optimised routes), technological assistance for the picker (guidance, scanning) and automated verification (checking the contents of every order). The most effective methods today combine all three, supported by execution software capable of learning from detected errors.

Weight verification, which Balea has relied on for 40 years, is the most reliable method for achieving zero errors: every order is weighed during picking, and the slightest anomaly (wrong reference, incorrect quantity, omission) is detected before the order leaves the warehouse. It is the safety net that secures operations even during peak periods or with temporary staff.

Warehouse productivity rests on four pillars: storage organisation (ABC method, slotting), process quality (picking methods matched to your flows), technological assistance for operators (guidance, batch picking, multi-order picking) and real-time management through a WMS or WES.

The most significant gains typically come from moving from single-order picking to simultaneous multi-order picking (batch picking).

Balea’s solutions enable precisely this step change. The result: significantly higher productivity, without sacrificing quality, two gains that have historically been at odds in traditional logistics.

The logistics sector faces a dual challenge: difficult recruitment, heavy reliance on temporary staff and physically demanding work (MSDs account for 95% of occupational illnesses in the sector). The more physically and mentally taxing a role, the higher absenteeism and turnover climb. The most effective response combines workstation ergonomics with technological assistance: a guided operator who no longer needs to search, count or manually verify tires less and becomes productive faster.

That is exactly what Balea’s solutions deliver. The picker is guided visually and weight verification validates each pick automatically: fewer unnecessary movements, less cognitive load and less risk of error. Onboarding takes just a few hours.

Yes. Balea’s solutions integrate easily with a range of WMS, WES, ERP and OMS platforms through standard connectors and APIs. They can complement your existing infrastructure or deploy as an end-to-end system managed by our WES, SOLEA. In both cases, our integration team works with your IT staff to define the architecture and developments suited to your context, with no disruption to your live operations.
